What Education Do You Need to Be a DJ? 4 Ways to Learn

You don't need a degree or any formal education to be a DJ. Most DJs learn by practicing, and many take lessons to move faster. What matters is skill on the mixer, a good ear and steady practice. There are four main ways to learn: teach yourself, follow free tutorials, take one-to-one lessons, or join a school.
Four ways to learn DJing
1. Teach yourself. You buy a controller, open the software and experiment. It costs little and you move at your own pace. The risk is slow progress and bad habits that nobody corrects.
2. Follow free tutorials. YouTube is full of lessons on single techniques. They work well for one question at a time. The order is patchy, though, so gaps are easy to miss. You can start with our YouTube channel.

What you should study
Whichever route you pick, cover these areas:
Music knowledge. Learn song structure, phrasing and different genres. This helps you build playlists that suit your audience. Basic theory, including keys, helps too.
Gear. Learn both a physical setup, such as CDJs or a controller, and DJ software. They're two different ways to perform.

Keep learning after the basics
Education doesn't stop after your first course. Seasoned DJs keep adding new tracks and play for live audiences often. Playing out builds your skill and your fan base.
