The best DJ software for most beginners is the one that matches the gear you'll play on. If you want to learn on club-style gear, start with rekordbox. If you want a free tool to try, use VirtualDJ's free tier or Serato DJ Lite. Pick one and stick with it while you learn.

We checked the prices below on 24 October 2026. They're in US dollars and they change often, so check each maker's website before you pay.

The four main DJ programs

rekordbox

  • Price: subscription only. A free plan costs $0. Paid plans run from $9 to $30 a month on yearly billing.

  • Best for: learning on CDJ and XDJ-style gear. You prepare your music on a laptop, export it to a USB drive and play without the laptop.

  • Watch out for: the monthly cost. There's no one-time option.

Serato DJ Pro

  • Price: $11.99 a month or $299 one-time. Serato DJ Lite is free.

  • Best for: scratch and hip-hop DJs, and anyone who wants wide hardware support.

  • Watch out for: streaming. Serato can't record a set that uses streamed tracks.

VirtualDJ

  • Price: a free tier for non-professional use. Home costs $4 a month, Pro costs $19 and Business costs $99. Pro is the plan for DJs who earn money from gigs.

  • Best for: mobile DJs, and anyone who wants to use many kinds of hardware. It also mixes video.

  • Watch out for: hardware choice. Check that your controller works with it before you buy.

Traktor Pro

  • Price: sources disagree on the current price, so we don't quote one. Check the Native Instruments website.

  • Best for: electronic music DJs. Traktor Pro 4 has stem separation built in.

  • Watch out for: streaming. Spotify isn't supported in Traktor.

Free ways to start

Three options cost nothing: the rekordbox free plan, VirtualDJ's free tier and Serato DJ Lite. Treat them as a trial. Cut-down versions often lack features you'll want later, so plan to upgrade.

What about streaming?

Spotify returned to Serato, rekordbox and djay Pro in September 2025. You need a Premium account. You can't use Stems with Spotify tracks, and there's no offline play. It's not in Traktor or VirtualDJ.

TIDAL, Beatport, Beatsource and SoundCloud work with the main programs. Streaming needs a stable internet connection, so keep a USB backup for gigs.

How to choose in three steps

  1. Look at the gear. Find out what the venues near you use. Ask resident DJs. You can also check the maker's website for a list of compatible hardware.

  2. Try the free versions. Spend a week in each. Notice which layout feels clear to you.

  3. Pick one and commit. Cue points, loops, EQ and phrasing work the same in every program. If you switch later, you'll only need to learn a new screen.

Why we teach on rekordbox

Many clubs use Pioneer DJ gear, and rekordbox connects to it without extra setup. You prepare your set on a laptop and export it to a USB drive. At the venue, you plug the drive into the CDJs. The laptop stays at home, so you don't worry about spilled drinks or theft.

Our Online DJ Classes use rekordbox, and the first modules cover its settings and how to import tracks. Before you buy gear, read our guide to what DJ equipment to buy first.
